STEP-G is one of the world’s leading producers of extruded aluminium profiles. With production sites in Germany, Belgium and China, the multinational company has a large portfolio including aluminium profiles and rods as well as further processed components for the automobile, rail, and aerospace industries. The Bonn location was recertified in May 2025 by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). The new certification of the plants in Bitterfeld and Vogt confirms STEP-G’s continuous commitment to sustainability and responsible corporate management.
The ASI certification programme was developed with extensive input from a large number of stakeholders. It is the world’s only comprehensive, voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the entire aluminium added value supply chain. ASI Performance Standard V3 defines 11 principles and 62 criteria relating to the three pillars of sustainability – environment, social responsibility and corporate management. Its goal is to effectively tackle central challenges in the aluminium industry. These include e.g. protecting biodiversity, upholding the rights of indigenous peoples, promoting the circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this way, ASI sets new standards of responsible operations in the aluminium industry and supports companies around the world in plausibly and transparently implementing their sustainability goals.
STEP-G draws on over 100 years of experience in aluminium processing. Today, sustainability has become an additional key focus alongside technical excellence. The award of the ASI Performance Standard is independent evidence of the company’s commitment to responsible action along the entire aluminium added value supply chain.
“For us the ASI certification is a major milestone. It proves that we see sustainability not just as a distant goal, but as a lived process. It is integrated in our daily work, our decisions and our sense of responsibility to the environment and society”, explains Oliver Isselmann, HSE Manager at the Bonn location.
Dr. Wolfgang Kühlein, Head of Quality and Technology, adds: “Sustainability and quality go hand-in-hand at STEP-G. The ASI certification is further proof that we set new benchmarks not only in technology, but also in ethical and eco-friendly operations.”
“Our ASI certification gives our customers worldwide the assurance that they can rely on sustainably tested and responsibly produced assembly solutions. Everything we do is transparent, future-oriented and in line with international sustainability standards”, emphasises Stefan Knabben, Managing Director of STEP-G.
The next ASI certification audit of STEP-G is scheduled for 2028. In the meantime, the team will continuously work on further improving processes and implementing sustainability goals without compromise.
